Question about an engine swap!

Postby CrimsonViel » Wed Feb 18, 2015 3:41 am

A couple weeks ago my base v6 3.8 3800 series 2000 Camaro spun a rod bearing, I don't know that the crank isn't damaged and I'm not looking to put another v6 into it. I know very little about repairs, this is my first car, I've dreamed of owning her since I was 5 years old and now she's mine but I have to get her back on the road. Anyway I'm looking to replace the whole engine, though my dad says he wants me to put a 350 or 305 in it, so I looked into those engines and I found this one on CL, was just wondering if anyone on here knows before hand whether there will be clearance for the steering and the oil pan, and whether I'll need cross mounts or anything else that might come up if I buy it and try to install it, could really use your guys' help, thankyou so much! I think that, by the time you convert it over to an LS1, you will have spent more than enough to buy a LS1 F-Body.
I would get a junk yard V6, put it in, sell your car and buy an LS1 car. You'll be finished a lot faster and will have spent less money.

If you want to put an older engine in it (Pre-LS), then you are asking for trouble. Nothing will fit right.

Do get me wrong, I'm not against swapping a V8 for a V6. I did it in my 3rd gen, but in a 4th gen a lot less is the same.
If it breaks, make it stronger.
If it doesn't, try harder.

+1! Especially if you're not good with repairs. Swapping an engine, even an LS V8 into a V6 car is still going to require some fabbing and redoing electrical. Not for the weak at heart. Throw a junk yard V6 in there, and flip it for a V8 car, or sell that one as a potential swap recipient, and find one with a V8. Decent 4th Gens can be had fairly inexpensively, and you'll be back on the road sooner than later. From there, you can hone your repair skills keeping the V8 car running.

But that's just me.
